For the great crossing of Nepal by the high passes Great Himalayan Trail the team was made up of René Tomio (High Mountain Guide) and Jacques Cordola as well as our Nepalese friends Tashi Chiring Sherpa, Mingma Gyeljen Sherpa, Dorjee Sherpa, Pasang, Raman, Kadji, Mingma Sherpa, Kumar.

During 1 month between Manaslu and Annapurna Nicole Tomio, Bea Roland joined us.

120 days – 120000 m vertical drop – 1300 km – 20 passes over 5000 m – 2 to over 6000 m

It’s the journey of a lifetime. A Mythical passage for some, initiatory course for others or a sporting course with a common point, a crossing that we do not leave on “unscathed”.

It is an exceptional adventure of over 4 months through the diversity of cultures, ethnicities and mountain regions of Nepal. It is the Great Himalaya Trail Nepal crossing the Himalayan range of Nepal by the high passes of Nepal.

We made this crossing in full over 4 months and a half however you can make this crossing in several times spread over several years.

The film above traces the Nepal part of the Great Himalayan Trail through the high road. This crossing of the Himalayan chain of Nepal we realized it in a team with our Nepalese friends.

The Great Himalayan Trail can be done in the west-east direction, that is from Dolpo to Kangchenjunga or east-west areas.

We chose the east-west direction for our crossing because we wanted to “pass” the passes between Makalu and Khumbu in late September early October to have good conditions on this high mountain section.

On the other hand, other trekkers who make this crossing over several years have the choice of the dates for the best period on their section as well as the direction of the crossing. This was the case for groups for the Dolpo-Alto Dolpo-Mustang Annapurna crossing as well as for the Khumbu-Makalu-Kangchenjunga crossing.

For us, the interest of the Great Himalaya Trail is, of course, the beauty and diversity of the landscapes crossed but especially the meetings with the people who live there as well as to live in a team with our Nepalese friends was an extraordinary adventure.

Duration 4 months – Group of 2 to 6 hikers – For Rates and information contact us.

From the region of Kangchenjunga to Dolpo the country is “traced” by mountain paths. Many crosses pass over 5000 m, others are frequented only by trekkers-mountaineers like crossing the 3 Cols between Makalu and Khumbu, others are abandoned and want to know the region or to have the sense of direction, finally, some are “luxurious”. Nepalese have carved and built steps of stairs. It is this exploratory trip the Great Himalayan Trail that we offer for 4 months of immersive walk in the Himalayan range of Nepal.

Before proposing the Great Himalaya Trail as a circuit we did it continuously over 4 months in the east-west direction that is to say that we left Suketar in the Kangchenjunga region on August 12 to join Beni that we reached the 18th of December after the French Pass on the Dhaulagiri Tour.

Our goal was to team up with Tashi Sherpa (the creator of Khumbu Shangrila with Ang Tsering Sherpa) as well as with four porters we knew too, and to go through the high passes of Nepal like the East Pass and the West Pass between Makalu and Khumbu, Mingmo La, Tesi Laptsa, Kangla La, Kangja La, French Pass and a few others.

We already have tents in places where there was no housing or a lot at home and even in the lodges. To eat only midday and evening bath and morning soup like Nepali. Never sick and super fit.

Everything went very well thanks to our great Nepali team. There was no problem, no one got sick, nothing broke, no problem with the Maoists of the time, good weather overall, in short, a lot of luck.

Crossing by sections of the Himalayan range of Nepal

The great crossing of the Himalayan chain of Nepal carried out by sections over several years.

Duration 5 sections from 24 to 47 days Period April-May or September to mid-November – Groups of 2 to 8 trekkers. Below the different sections for those who wish to spread the crossing on several stays.

Section 1 Kangchenjunga – Kangchenjunga valley junction with Makalu Junction – Makalu base camp – 3-way crossing – AmphuLapsta crossing – Pangboche.

Duration 41 days – best periods from April to May and mid-September to the end of October. Group of 2 to 6 hikers. Rates and information contact us.

The crossing of the Kanchenjunga region to that of Makalu is rarely done so that this trip is uncrowded and very wild. From Kambachen the landscapes are desert and exceptional view of the Jannu and Kangchenjunga. These are the great wild areas close to Tibet and Sikkim.

The connection with the Makalu valley can be done by two different routes:

The first takes us to the valley for 4 days. The second takes us through the Lumba Samba pass to join Makalu BC. The Makalu Valley in Tashigaon is located in the rice fields. Different ethnicities coexist, Rai, Sherpa, Limbu, and we offer their own culture.

Then, slowly, we will go up the valleys of Arun and Barun. The latter makes us nearly 5000 m at the base camp Hillary Makalu. Above us is the huge ridge of Makalu up to 8463 m.

We continue with the crossing of the 3 passes for several days of “mountain” at high altitude (more than 6000 m). Then we will join Pangboche by the neck of Mingmo La or by the collar of Amphulapsa according to the conditions.

The end of the trek takes us to Sherpa Khumbu country in Lukla.

Section 2 Khumbu Valley – Kala Patthar – Crossing Tesi Lapsa – Rolwaling – Langtang – Crossing Kangya La – Gosainkund – Col Lauribina.

Duration 36 days – the Best period is from April to May and from mid-October to the end of November. Group of 2 to 8 hikers. Rates and information contact us

Khumbu has the most beautiful mountains in the world, Ama Dablam, Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, etc. Buddhist culture is very present – many temples. In Khumbu, we are still above 3500 m with many villages around 4000 m. The climb to Kala Pathar allows to “touch” Everest.

From Thamé we will cross the difficult pass of Tashi Lapsa to join the Rolwaling and then the Langtang. Crossing the Kangia La pass is an “engaged” itinerary and offers a little frequented circuit far from the usual trails in an isolated and beautiful environment.

Finally, a fantastic climb to the Gosainkund lakes. The marked path follows a ridge, then the side of the mountain. That’s wonderful. Then we discover the Gosainkund lakes from a view at height. Do not miss the sunset on the lakes. The next day we leave towards the Lauribinyak Pass while walking on large plateaus. The climb is not difficult and very pleasant, then down into the valley.

Section 3 Manaslu Tour – Larkya Pass – Naar and Phu Valleys – Kangla Pass – Manang Pass – Thorong – Jomson.

Duration 24 days – Best period April-May and beginning of October to mid-November. Group of 2 to 10 hikers. Rates and information contact us.

Much less crowded than the trekking tour of Annapurna, trekking tour Manaslu is a wild trek that will take you to the “end of the world” in a region of Nepal preserved mass tourism where architecture, people, landscapes, breathe Tibetan culture.

We will pass at the foot of Manaslu (8160 m) then will climb the Larkya Pass at 5130 m.

The climb up the Naar Phu Valley leads us on a journey from another time.

The passage of the Kangla Pass brings us back to the Annapurna Valley after having offered us at the top one of the most beautiful views of the Annapurna Range from Annapurna 3 to Tilicho.

Section 4 Annapurna Tour – Thorong Pass – Marpha – Dhaulagiri Valley and Hidden Valley – French Pass to Dhaulagiri – Pokhara.

Duration 30 days – the Best period is from April to May and from mid-October to mid-November. Group of 2 to 10 hikers. Rates and information contact us.

We reach Jomson and Marpha by either the Thorong Pass or the Mesokanto Pass after passing Tilicho Lake. Climb through the desert and mineral landscapes.

From Marpha we will reach the Yaks Kharka (sheepfolds) before crossing the Col des Français with an exceptional view of the Dhaulagiri.

Then the descent to Beni gently leads us into the greener spaces.

Section 5 Muktinath – Mustang – Lo Mantang – Kagbeni – Dolpo Top – Dho – Shey Gompa – Phoksumdo – Dolpo – Jumla.

Duration 47 days – Best period April-May and beginning of September to end of October.

Group of 2 to 6 hikers. Rates and information contact us

Mustang is, among other things, a country of color contrast. Blue sky, orange wheat fields, white snowy peaks, islets of greenery, ocher rock of great canyons or troglodyte cities. Mustang is isolated and the Tibetan culture very present in all the villages.

From Kagbeni begins the crossing of Upper Dolpo.

This crossing involves relatively long stages with about 10 nights at more than 4,000 m and 8 passages of passes over 5,000 m. The welcome, kindness and sweetness of the villagers and nomads will quickly make you forget this rustic side. This trek is perfectly adapted to the following Tibetan maxim: “the trip is a return to basics”.
